The 1961 albumΒ MosaicΒ marked a pivotal moment in the story ofΒ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersΒ with the drummer welcoming the arrival of trumpeterΒ Freddie HubbardΒ (replacingΒ Lee Morgan) and pianistΒ Cedar WaltonΒ (replacingΒ Bobby Timmons). The band also expanded to a sextet with the addition of trombonistΒ Curtis FullerΒ who joined existing members tenor saxophonistΒ Wayne ShorterΒ and bassistΒ Jymie MerrittΒ to establish a powerful new line-up that would perform together until 1964 and record several classic albums includingΒ Buhainaβs DelightΒ andΒ Free for All.Β MosaicΒ opens with a flourish as the band launches into the magnificent title track composed byΒ Walton, and the set also includes memorable compositions byΒ ShorterΒ (βChildren of the Nightβ), Fuller (βArabiaβ), and Hubbard (βDown Underβ and βCrisisβ).
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered byΒ Kevin GrayΒ from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
